DAY 1: Travel day to San Jose international airport, Costa Rica. You will be meet at the airport by a Vajra Sol representative. The first night is spent in a charming hotel in the outskirts of San Jose.
From the Rainforest & River ...
DAY 2: We begin a three-day whitewater rafting trip on one of the world’s “Top 5 Most Wild and Scenic Rivers”. The Pacuare River has class III & IV rapids, however, previous whitewater rafting experience is not required; one only needs to bring a sense of adventure. We paddle through incredible scenery of mountains and rainforests before arriving at our lodge. As the waters are tropical temperatures there is no need for wetsuits. Accommodations for the next two nights are at the Pacuare Lodge located along the river in the heart of a primary rainforest. The lodge is impressively dedicated to sustainable tourism while at the same time having perfected jungle-comfort. It is the ideal place to truly disconnect from a fast-pace lifestyle, relax and completely immerse in nature. Our yoga space for the next few days is a divine sanctuary, a deck that overlooks the flowing river below and surrounded by the vibrant flora of the Pacuare.
DAY 3: Today we put our paddles aside for a rainforest hike through the Pacuare Rainforest Reserve. Learn about the fascinating biodiversity of this very fragile and spectacular ecosystem as we are led along a jungle trail by a naturalist guide. In the afternoon get ready to soar on a thrill-filled canopy tour where we fasten ourselves into harnesses, clip onto a cable and zip between a series of platforms high in the trees!
DAY 4: We continue with rafting on the Pacuare River which takes us through thrilling class IV rapids and pristine wilderness passing waterfalls and canyons. At the end of our rafting trip we depart for the Caribbean Coast traveling by road approximately two hours to arrive at our lodge near the quaint, laidback town of Puerto Viejo. Accommodations for the next three nights are at the idyllic and serene Namuwoki Lodge that borders the Gandoca-Mazanillo National Wildlife Refuge and is a few steps from a beautifully lush and long stretch of unspoiled beach.
To the Caribbean Coast…
DAY 5: Today we visit Gandoca-Mazanillo Wildlife Reserve which protects some the region’s most endangered flora and fauna, encompasses 10 kilometers of coastline, a 740 acre forest, a coral reef, marshland and mangroves. The Refuge is also the nesting area for several species of turtles, manatees, crocodiles, caimans, tarpons and dolphins. Our hike through the park will give opportunity to see monkeys, toucans, sloths, iguanas and a whole host of other wildlife inhabiting the area. Snorkeling can also be done in the park for viewing the protected coral and marine life.
DAY 6: We take a scenic journey winding through waterways surrounded by the jungle in a wood-crafted canoe to the remote indigenous village of Yorkín. Here we are greeted by the Bribri indian community. We learn about the traditional ways of living and visit the local school. The women of the village also explain about the cocoa and banana plantations which are their livelihood and the use of medicinal plants which is their main means for treating illnesses. After they prepare a homemade typical lunch for us we see how chocolate is processed from the cocoa plant. You are also free to take a sample of this very pure and delicious chocolate. This full day tour is a unique opportunity to witness a way of living from the land that is a vast difference from modern lifestyles.
DAY 7: After our morning yoga session you have free time to explore the beach, relax in a hammock, partake in an optional tour/adventure activity or visit the nearby colorful town of Puerto Viejo. After lunch we return back to San Jose (a 4-hour drive) passing through the Braulio Carillo National Park, one of Costa Rica’s most scenic and wild regions.
